There are a number of skills that people should acquire when they are going to start a business that involves Internet marketing. To have only those things that you need in the forefront and to be able to prioritize them will only be possible when all the other unrelated things are out of the way.

Planning is another thing that works together with organization and focus. Just like if you went on a road trip - you would need a map or some kind of directions to get to where you want to go. It is the same with any endeavor where you hope to reach a goal - in this case a successful internet marketing business from home. So lots of information to sift through and much easier if you can determine only the data you need to perform whatever task is at hand.

If it takes making folders with labels - whether virtual or physical, this is a big help to organize your business. 'As above so below' - and in this connotation if you clear your desk your mind will be much more clear. If your mind is clear you will be able to function much more efficiently (accurately and quickly) to achieve your goals each day.

Writing is also a key skill for Internet marketing because advertising and marketing, networking, blogging, online communications, etc, all involve writing. It is important that you learn to express yourself clearly because for one example, if you had an off-line business people would come in the store, actually see what you have for sale, and are able to read the specs and details on the box, or to ask a you questions.

Online this is not the case, and you have to be able to convey the details clearly so as not to leave a gaping hole that may stop someone from completing the transaction until they are able to clarify whatever their question is. One should not pander to any inclination for 'stage fright' with regard to writing or to cop out by saying they don't like to write, they can't write or any other excuse. It is one of those things you will have to learn to overcome if writing is a problem.

While it's so much more relaxed and casual to work from your home office, you still need to keep in mind that it is for the purpose of business that you are there. Be sure that part of your organization and focus involves committing your time (scheduling) - where you will sit and work and do nothing else. Turn on your voice mail and be sure that your family and friends know and respect your hours of business just as they would have to if you were going off to a job. If you have little kids then obviously this time allocated to your business should be when they are at school or sleeping if possible.

You really won't get as much done, or retain as much information if you are constantly being interrupted by the doorbell, phone, kids, dog, etc. Of course the kids (and dogs) are some of the main good reasons you have for starting a home business; and of course you can't always have 100% control over them, but with a little planning and mutual respect you can have more time for them and still have a successful business.

Oh - and don't forget to rest - when you shut down (and put everything away) at the end of your work time, shut the door - even if the door is only in your mind. You have to have a time where you are OFF work - to relax and enjoy the other facets of your life. Resist the temptation to log back on your computer every time you get a bright idea. Just write it down and take care of it next time you go back to work.

There is so much to learn when you first start trying to build a home business. It is of course natural to make mistakes since we are only human but then some mistakes are worse than others because they can permanently damage our reputation. Some examples of the more serious issues are:

'Ethical' email Marketing is permission-based. That means that we never send anything to anyone who has not first requested information ("opted" in); and we have the documentation to protect ourselves from complaints. "Opt-in" means that they have willingly submitted their email address to you, which is giving you permission.

This documentation can include the person's IP address, email address, date and time that the person opted-in. The person may 'forget' they requested the information and start marking your messages as spam. If the problem is escalated you need to be able to prove that you did not knowingly send anything that was not legal (requested).

Too many spam complaints can cause you a lot of trouble and depending on how severe the problem becomes, you can lose your domain, your hosting account and/or your autoresponder account. Spam is very illegal and that goes not only for the marketers that may send unsolicited advertising, but also to any system or application that allows the crime to be committed using their resources.

So this means that your providers, while they do not want to lose your business, are forced to drop you so that they are not seen as a 'rogue' system and lose their reputation with ISPs (Internet Service Providers) and ESPs (email Service Providers), etc., not to mention ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) - who made the law against spam and enforce it.

Another extremely important issue is being completely ethical and truthful in your advertising and dealing with your prospects and customers. Never make guarantees that you are not prepared to honor - for example if you guarantee someone will make X number of dollars; because if they don't, then you are liable because you promised.

Of course what this means is do not guarantee anything you do not control. For real, because you would need to take that amount of money out of your pocket and give it to them to cover your 'guarantee', otherwise it would be 'false advertising'.

You should never guarantee any amount of money or any amount of time. You do not know the future or what that person will do in terms of how much effort they will make that would determine how much they make or by when.

Another serious legal issue is 'bait and switch' - that means, for one example that you advertise one thing and then do another. For instance if your ad says someone will receive A,B, and C for X number of dollars. After they pay X, what they receive is not A,B and C but only A and they are told they need to give you more money to get B and C. Or it may be that A,B and/or C do not do what you promised and they need D,E or F to make it work.

Still another example is if you offer a full refund then you need to give the refund promptly. You can qualify that for example using a time constraint '30 day money back guarantee' or 'refund is minus administrative, handling or shipping fee'. State exactly what you are prepared to honor.

Be very careful not to 'bend' the truth in these ways as there are lots of people who will take you to task for being less than completely honest. 'Mean what you say and say what you mean'. The success of your business does depend on your reputation and the Internet and 'social' networks make it very easy for 'the word' to get around, whether positive or negative!

Staying focused and motivated are some of the main keys to developing a successful home business. At start-up, these skills are necessary to create a plan and get the information and training you need to develop your ideas. It is not possible to achieve your goals without first having a plan of action regarding the steps you will take to hit your target. This is just normal and nothing to get bummed out over. It's reality. We have to work and invest our time and effort if we want to see the money.

While competing with other people is not that great of a way to motivate a lot of people, some might respond to this method. More likely competing with yourself would be more appropriate. In other words just like exercising - at first you are sluggish and tire easily, but if you are focused and determined to keep it up, you will build momentum and feel stronger each time; you will naturally want to do more of what makes you feel good or that produces the desired results. You can really get a great feeling of self-esteem from exercising, whether it is your mind, your body or your spirit.

Something else that has to do with mindset and might be considered a competitive strategy to keep motivated would be self-talk. Self talk can be telling yourself that you can do so much more than what you are given credit for at your job. You will show them or at least yourself that you can and you will earn more money than what they think you are worth. You may also be pleasantly surprised at how liberating it feels when you can take control of your own financial situation and realize you can earn as much as you want to when you are working for yourself and not anybody else.
